Library Lion is a worthy picture book not only about libraries, but also about loving your neighbor.

*Library Lion by Michelle Knudsen, illustrated by Kevin Hawkes. Candlewick, 2006. 48 pages.

When a real lion strolls pas the stone lions right into the library, Mr. McBee is understandably upset. He leaves the circulation desk and runs to tell Miss Merriweather, the head librarian.

“No running,” Miss Merriweather reminds him. But as long as the lion isn’t breaking any rules, she isn’t bothered by his presence.

The lion makes himself quite comfortable in the library, enjoying story time and objecting with a roar when it ends. That brings Miss Merriweather, who informs him that if he isn’t quiet, he will have to leave. At the children’s request, she agrees that he may return to storytime on the following day.

The lion faithfully follows all the rules and is soon not only accepted, but also helpful and welcomed by everyone except Mr. McBee, who does not think lions belong in a library.

One day, when the lion breaks a rule out of necessity, he banishes himself, much to the disappointment of almost everyone. Can he possibly be convinced to return after he has violated Miss Merriweather’s favorite rule?

This is such a lovely story and the muted acrylic and pencil illustrations with plenty of white space around the edges provide a distinguished, classic feel. Even the stone lions reflect the tone of the story.

Considerations: none

Bottom Line: A worthy picture book not only about libraries, but also about loving your neighbor.
