Ribbit! The Truth about Frogs is an engaging nonfiction picture book that answers lots of good questions and helps the reader admire these fascinating amphibians.

*Ribbit! The Truth About Frogs by Annette Whipple, illustrated by Juanbjuan Oliver. Reycraft Books, 2022. 32 pages.
- Reading Level: Picture books, ages 4-8
- Recommended For: Ages 4-8
In a visual feast of photos and facts, perfect for either casual perusal or beginning research, Whipple explores vital questions about these fascinating amphibians. What’s the difference between frogs and toads? How do they eat? What sounds do they make? How do tadpoles grow? How do frogs protect themselves? How can I see frogs?
See? These are questions worth asking. The answers are short and simple with enough depth to pique further interest. The photos are gorgeous, accompanied by a few cartoon-style illustrations. Who knew frogs could be so beautiful? There’s no mention of evolution and Whipple explains why frogs matter to nature, to science, and how we can be good stewards of them and their habitats.
This is a good example of Truth in a nonfiction picture book because the author clearly delights in creation and enthusiastically invites young readers to join her in wonder. See also her books about sharks (Chomp!), owls (Whooo Knew?) dogs (Woof!), cats (Meow!) and lizards (Flick!).
*indicates a Redeemed Reader starred review, an outstanding example in its field.
Considerations: none
Bottom Line: Ribbit! The Truth About Frogs is a good purchase for any library with curious readers who love the beauty and wonder of nature.
