Two children learn much about the Watcher who watches over them in this poignant picture book.

*The Watcher: Inspired by Psalm 121 by Nikki Grimes, illustrated by Bryan Collier. Eerdmans, 2017. 42 pages.

Jordan doesn’t know why Tanya is so mean. She’s downright prickly. When a new kid shows up named Israel, Jordan knows he needs to warn him about Tanya.

All Tanya wants is a friend. She stutters and wears glasses, and her next meal isn’t a guarantee. She pushes people away because they all seem out to get her.

Both Tanya and Jordan have adults in their lives who are praying for them and encouraging them each to look to the Lord for help. He is watching over His children. As the two children begin to turn to the Lord for help, their relationship begins to change.

Like in her One Last Word collection, Nikki Grimes uses the Golden Shovel poetry technique in this picture book to tremendous effect. The last word in each line of each poem recreates Psalm 121 even as the storyline echoes the truth in this psalm. Collier’s collage illustrations are a perfect complement, capturing snapshots of each school day along with children’s emotions. This book is a stunning tribute to the Lord’s care for His people.
