*Faith Builder Catechism: Devotions to Level Up Your Family Discipleship by Kevin Hippolyte, Jared Kennedy, and Trey Kullman. New Growth Press, 2023. 136 pages.

  • Reading Level: Adults
  • Recommended For: Families with kids of all ages

If we’re honest, our kids are often catechized by YouTube, video games, and online streaming. But God wants them to be catechized in the beauty of his good news. He wants them to be immersed in the wonder of his great adventure.

A catechism is a tool for teaching, using questions and answers. Once far more common among churches, catechisms seem old-fashioned to many. And yet, they are still an excellent tool for instructing people of all ages. In the process of memorizing questions and answers, learners build a vocabulary that enables them to process and discuss the great truths of the faith.

But the authors of Faith Builder Catechism have taken it one step further. In keeping with a video game “Level Up” idea, they begin with the very foundation: God’s Glory. Five total levels include God’s Glory, God’s Kingdom, the Gospel, God’s Grace, and God’s Church and Mission. In their introduction, they acknowledge their source material: the Heidelberg Catechism, the Westminster Shorter Catechism, Luther’s Small Catechism, and the Catechism for Young Children. Those who’ve grown up with one or more of these catechisms will recognize their influence in this new catechism!

In addition to 52 questions and answers, each Q and A includes a memory verse, a Bible passage, a devotional, questions to think about, and a “power-up question” to help get the ball rolling. Ideally, families would take a question each week, using this book as a devotional to talk about the question over the week as they memorize it.

Not everything relates to video games. However, those who enjoy video games will find this appealing and relevant. Families who’ve struggled to know how to start with a catechism will find this a very user-friendly start.

Bottom line: Highly recommended as a tool for family discipleship!
