Mr. Jonathan Darcy and Miss Juliet Tilney once again join forces, this time facing the perils of Lady Catherine de Bourgh.

The Perils of Lady Catherine De Bourgh by Claudia Gray. Vintage, 2024. 352 pages.
- Reading Level: Adults
- Recommended For: Mature Teens and adults, ages 16 and up
Mr. Darcy and Miss Tilney are back in Claudia Gray’s third mystery. This time, both are summoned to Rosings Park. Has a murder been committed? No. But Jonathan’s aunt, the indomitable Lady Catherine de Bourgh, is very convinced that someone is trying to murder her. Having heard of Jonathan and Juliet’s prior successes, she invites them to Rosings. Then, as only Lady Catherine can do, she makes life complicated for our young protagonists.
Jonathan and Juliet’s friendship grows as they work together to solve this mystery. Meanwhile, Anne de Bourgh, married to Colonel Fitzwilliam, has her own secret worries. Something is certainly going on with the Collins’ family, but is it sinister? And the fathers of our young detectives are both determined to protect the hearts of their offspring.
The conclusion is satisfying and even a little humorous. Circumstances again separate the budding attachment of Jonathan and Juliet, but the narrator hints at future adventures.
Considerations:
- Language: Some profanity and British cursing, written in Jane Austen’s style with letters removed.
- Sexuality: In this series, sex is implied to be enjoyed between married couples. The two protagonists experience growing chemistry as their friendship matures.
Bottom Line: A well-done third volume in an entertaining regency murder mystery series will leave readers hoping for more.
